Due to rain, the Polliwog field trip has been moved to Tuesday, Sept. 24. If you don’t plan on going with us, please leave your child’s carseat on the art mat.
The TB testing has also been rescheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 24. The cost is $15 and can be paid by cash or check.
The schedule is as follows:
Tuesday 9/24 from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m: All parents come to Downey to get the TB test injection. (Note: This is a field trip day for Polliwogs, so Polliwog parents should try to get their TB tests out of the way by 9:00 a.m.)
Friday 9/27 from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m: All parents come to Downey to have their test location looked at (for signs of a reaction).
Where to turn in your test results: Jeremy and Sarah will be at Downey on Friday to collect the test results. If you don’t see them, please hand your results to a teacher or Dustin.
If you plan to get your TB test through a separate provider: Turn in your test result records by October 4. You can turn in your results to Jeremy, Sarah, your child’s teacher, or Dustin.
“Research published in Early Childhood Research & Practice shows that children that attend play-based rather than academic preschools become better students.”
“Self-initiated and self-directed play means the child is calling the shots and learning what comes naturally. If a child strums a guitar because he loves it, that’s play. When being instructed, the child may enjoy the experience, but it’s not the same, because the motivation is at least partly external.”
“… Dr. Kenneth R. Ginsburg, a professor of pediatrics at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania and a leading expert on resilience, remarks, “Every child needs free, unscheduled time to master his or her environment.” Play is valuable because it miniaturizes the world to a manageable size and primes kids for learning.”
“Given our global challenges, tomorrow’s adults will need the skills developed by such play—innovation, creativity, collaboration and ethical problem solving—more than any preceding generation. A major IBM study of more than 1,500 CEOs from 60 countries and 33 industries in 2010 found that the single most sought-after trait in a CEO is creativity.”
“Ultimately, everyone must rely on their own resources and sense of self or they’ll always be looking for external direction and validation. Mental health workers say that produces kids that take unnecessary risks, have poor coping skills and are vulnerable to substance abuse.”

Welcome to the 2013/2014 school year — and a redesigned website!
It’s hard to believe that it’s almost time to start a new school year! The summer seems to fly by now, and the awesome weather made it go even faster.
For those of you who have already enrolled your child in the 2013/2014 school year, you should have received your package of information in the mail. If not, many of the forms you need are available on our Forms page. If you or someone you know has not enrolled yet but is interested, we do still have some slots open! Feel free to contact us and we will get you set up for the school year.
The last Storytime/Playdate for the summer will be held at the school Friday, Aug. 9 at 10 a.m. Everyone is welcome!
Don’t forget! Tonight at 6:30 p.m. is the Officer-led Orientation Meeting for the new school year. Parents/caregivers of children who have already enrolled for the 2013/2014 school year should have received a packet of papers in the mail. Please bring these to the meeting, as well as your checkbook! First and last month’s tuition is due tonight. You will receive your school “job” as well as other information you will need to keep the school year running smoothly.
This is an adults-only event, please. Attendees are welcome to bring a snack to share.
The next set of meetings are the Teacher-led Orientations, which are scheduled for Aug. 19 (Frogs), Aug. 20 (Polliwogs), and Aug. 21 (Tadpoles).
